Graphic Designer

Thames & Kosmos is a leading designer, producer, and publisher of educational toys, including STEM kits and board games, based in Providence, RI. Our products are sold through toy, game, book, and school market channels around the world.

We are looking for a talented, inspired, full-time graphic designer to join our in-house design team and perform a wide variety of product- and marketing-related design functions.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Design, layout, and typesetting of content-rich instruction manuals (books) for our products
  2. Design and layout of retail packaging for our products, including structure, pack-out, and graphics
  3. Design of visual advertisements for print, web, and social media
  4. Design of signage, displays, and other merchandising materials for retail stores and tradeshows
  5. Physical production of handmade sample prototypes of new products: in-house printing, cutting, and assembly of packaging mock-ups
  6. Illustration for product packaging, manuals, and marketing materials
  7. Photography of products for catalogs, web, and other applications
  8. Editing/retouching of photographs
  9. Design of marketing materials such as sell sheets, presentation decks, promotional items, and catalogs
  10. Updates to company website, both updating/editing copy and creation/management of images
  11. Organizing digital artwork files
  12. Working within defined schedules and meeting artwork deadlines
  13. Working with external partners (manufacturers, licensors) to create designs
  14. Sending art files to our partners and customers
  15. Pre-press, file preparation, and sending of art files to printers
  16. Ordering and stock keeping of design supplies including inks, paper, and other materials
  17. Contributing to product design and branding efforts
  18. Assisting sales and marketing teams with image requests
  19. Assistance with the creation of product videos


Design skills and experience

  1. Substantial commercial design experience, working for a company or firm on real graphic design projects from start to finish
  2. Superior InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat skills. Other programs a plus.
  3. Mac OS, Microsoft Office, Google docs, email skills
  4. Strong visual design skills including understanding of composition, organization of information, hierarchy, use of type, and color theory
  5. Refined sense of design, knowing what looks professional and what does not
  6. Ability to critique your own work and others’ work, and absorb and apply feedback
  7. Ability to understand, work with, and adhere to style guides
  8. Ability to do competitive research and analysis of other products/packages/designs on the market during the design process
  9. Manual crafting skills to cut and build packaging mockups and prototypes
  10. Experience laying out larger documents (50+ pages) in InDesign, working with type, working with raster and vector graphics
  11. Ability to work with large (in file size, and dimensions) and complex packaging files in Illustrator and Photoshop
  12. Ability to work with a small team; take direction and feedback and incorporate it into the documents
  13. Keen eye and attention to detail to avoid mistakes, whether they are graphical errors, typographical errors, formatting mistakes in text
  14. Experience preparing and packaging files for printing
  15. Understanding of color profiles, offset printing, and experience with how images on the monitor translate into printed images
  16. Basic understanding of web design

  7. Fast learner; can learn, retain, and apply information quickly and efficiently
  8. Ability to remain calm, positive, and effective in high-energy, high-expectation situations of urgency
  9. High-degree of computer literacy; must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint Experience
  10. A true interest in Thames & Kosmos products and general mission
  11. Team-player
  12. German language skills are a plus but certainly not required. We work closely with our parent company, Kosmos, in Germany. Many files are adapted from German into English.
  1. This position is full-time and in-house in Providence, RI. Remote working is not a possibility.
  2. Salary commensurate with experience. Full-time, based on 40-hour workweek, regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm), bi-weekly payroll.
